Crossing Strangers marks Johannesburg-based photographer Andile Buka's first published body of work. Born and raised in Orange Farm, Crossing Strangers is a photobook that looks and thinks through the landscape of Johannesburg, and the people who both inhabit and fill its city streets. It is a visual reflection of a personal engagement with both the city's past and current landscape.


Included within is an essay by Rangoato Hlasane (Co-Founder of Keleketla Media Arts Project) titled: Monuments To The Eternal Spaces.

Andile Buka (b.1990) is a Johannesburg-based photographer. Self-taught, his work has been exhibited in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and internationally, including at Lagos Photo Festival, the Internationale Schillertage Festival (Mannheim), Brighton Museum & Art Gallery (UK), Rush Arts Gallery (New York), and Totodo Books (Tokyo). In 2020 he was awarded a Pro Helvetia artist residency and in 2017 was selected for the New York Times Portfolio Review. His commercial clients include DJ Mag, Art Basel, Volkswagen, H&M, Dior, Avant Arte, Reebok, Nike, Maison Margiela, The Wire, Adidas, Levi’s, Converse, and ASOS. His photographs have appeared in Vogue Italia, Aperture, Ogojiii, The New York Times, The Guardian, VSCO, and Leica Fotografie International.
